Come learn the secret to deep flexibility - and improve your handstand - with Ariana Ferber-Carter!

The Sellam Circus School is pleased to welcome Ariana Ferber-Carter on Sunday, January 12th for two exciting foundation workshops:  Active Flex, and How to Build a Handstand.

The Active Flex workshop will provide approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes of intense flexibility work - with a focus upon the legs.  (For those interested in progressing to active flex work for the back, we suggest also scheduling a private lesson.)  For this workshop, Ariana draws upon her extensive contortion training, sharing techniques to open the length of the leg and release the hips, building strength, suppleness, and control.  While there are no pre-requisites for this workshop, please expect to do heavy kicking and knee work, with regular and deep engagement of the pike position.

Have you been wishing you could learn How to Build a Handstand?  Get cracking with this dynamic 1-hour workshop that incorporates inventive conditioning drills and practical exercises to build coordination and improve body alignment.  You do not have to be able to hold a handstand on your own to take this class - beginners, and those who are looking for techniques to overcome fear of inversions are encouraged to take part!

April 28th:  The Circus Music Workshop     with Peter Bufano

The Sellam Circus School is excited to announce the first in a series of collaborations with The Circus Music Workshop - a new project by veteran circus composer and musician, Peter Bufano.  The Circus Music Workshop was conceived as a way to foster advanced musical literacy among circus artists, and create access to original scoring.  On April 28, The Circus Music Workshop and The Sellam Circus School will partner to bring a pilot workshop to selected students in The Sellam Circus School's PCAT Program. During this workshop, we will identify the needs of each student’s act, practice critical listening, explore the dramatic relationship between circus arts and music; and learn skills in editing existing music for a specific act. Students will better understand how music can add dimension to their work, and gain experience identifying, and editing, existing music to best suit their own artistic expression.  The Pilot Workshop is the basis for a series of in-depth workshops, that will introduce circus students to student composers, and facilitate collaborations to create original music for acts.

Peter Bufano is a composer, musician, and educator with expertise in narrative media including circus arts, film, theater, broadcast, and streaming media. He is well known for his original scores for circuses, as well as his band, Cirkestra.

Bufano entered the circus arts as a young graduate of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College . He went on to tour with Ringling for four years, performing thousands of shows in front of millions of people.  Bufano began his career with Ringling as a clown; his first tour brought him throughout the entire continental U.S. before he even reached his twentieth birthday. Bufano then took a hiatus to study Film Scoring in Boston at Berklee College of Music; he later returned to Ringling in the position of keyboardist in the circus band. He toured for another two years, performing in such venues as Madison Square Garden in New York, TD Garden in Boston, The Staples Center in Los Angeles, X-Finity Center in Washington, D.C., and The United Center in Chicago.

Bufano's musical work in the circus continued to evolve as he began creating original music for shows. Starting in 2003 with his original score for The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, Bufano's signature style became an industry staple.  He has continued to innovate evocative musical soundscapes for circus; most recently, Bufano has worked collaboratively with two other composers to score The Big Apple Circus' 2018-2019 touring show,   Bufano is an Assistant Professor of Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music and is the 2019 Newbury Comics Fellow for his work in circus music.
